The Kuban Keto Origin Story


 

Owner Rosie is a Cuban born American with a passion for the keto diet, but not for the reasons that some would expect. She shared with me the details of her mother coming down with cancer, and that is when she found that the keto diet was the most helpful to her mother’s battle. Because her mom only liked traditional Cuban cuisine, Rosie learned how to transform classic recipes so that they can meet the limitations of the keto diet. This helped her mother overcome cancer, and Kuban Keto Kitchen was born.

SOLUTION

“Keto with a Kuban Twist!”

 
1. Focus on food, not diet

The owner didn’t want people to focus on the dietary aspect of her food, she wanted people to associate her food with the traditional Cuban cuisine instantly.

We identified her own childhood staple as a fried egg, a common Cuban go-to that even my own Cuban-born mother shared. By representing this meal as the heart of home, it creates an instant association for those who notice the country as the breakfast pan’s handle.

 
2. Representing strong values

Rosie transformed classic Cuban recipes to adhere to the keto diet, which helped her mother overcome cancer. This powerful story can potentially make a difference in the lives of others, and for the older generations it is more difficult to change their diets. By representing Cuba in earnest, instead of diets, it will attract those more traditional-minded who would be otherwise detracted from the idea of changing what they eat in order to live healthier lives.

 
3. Supporting collateral design

Fundamental brand consistency is expanded upon and strengthened by collateral design. Business cards, promotional stickers, coupon cards, and thank you postcards were customized and combined with the existing illustrative brand assets to create a cohesive identity for Kuban Keto Kitchen.

The challenge was to embody the classic cuisine from Cuban heritage with handcrafted home cooking, while putting a spotlight on the healthiness of the food, without it appearing like a “fad diet” or associated too much with diet culture.

Design Execution
With a heart-shaped egg to symbolize “feel good” food that is actually good for your body and heart, the fried egg also represents a quick and classic Cuban delight. The frying pan represents cooking, with the Cuban country as the handle of the pan. Every Cuban-born person that sees this logomark feels instantly connected to the brand.

Print
The business cards are thick statement with raised gold foil touches and a velvet suede finish. My recommendation to swap the orange for raised gold takes the appetizing portion of the logo and represents it with chic class for attractive marketing. The owner loves her cards and is in the progress of expanding her business to re-enforce this aspect of her brand across all printed materials.
